The first essential element is to look at all of the skills and knowledge you have and make a decision on what kind of business you will start. Many people are quick to take what they currently do as a job and turn it into a business, however, don’t be so hasty. Take the time to list those things you know a lot about, or all of the skills you have. Don’t forget to list hobbies or things you do for fun as well because these are certainly options for you.
Once you create your list, begin to look over your list and look at those things that create the most passion in you. This is important. If you choose something you don’t have a passion about, and especially if you pick something you really aren’t that fond of doing, you won’t be willing to stick with it when things get tough and you most likely won’t believe in it enough to put in 16 hour days, 7 days a week. Make sure you are going to love, enjoy, and be willing to stay up late, get up early, and do it all day.
The second essential element to go from an employee to entrepreneur is to make sure you are going to be disciplined enough to do what you have to do. Many people believe that starting their own business will be great because they will no longer have a boss. What they fail to realize is that they now have to be the person they answer to, and they have to often times be harder on themselves than their boss ever was. You must hold yourself accountable, and even more than when you have a job, get up and go to work regardless of whether you are sick or not.
Being your own boss takes a lot more discipline and a much deeper commitment than going to a job does. If you don’t have the discipline to put in long days and sleep less, to do the work that needs done regardless of how you feel or whether or not you want to do it. If you aren’t willing to get up, no matter how sick you are, and go to the office, you might not want to go from being an employee to an entrepreneur.
The final element is to realize that the road will be rocky, and sometimes those rocks will be boulders. The road you travel when you own your own business isn’t always easy, peachy, or easy to travel. There will be times when you don’t know how you are going to pay the bills for the business, let alone your personal bills at home. There will be times when you are so tired, beat down, and run ragged that you don’t think you can go on anymore. Regardless of what happens or how you feel, you have to keep walking the path if you are going to be successful, and you need to make sure you are willing and able to keep going on the path no matter what happens.
