Okay. And how do we do this?
First, we need to dissect ourselves. We need to look at ourselves from the inside out. We need to know who we really are and what we are made of.
We are born with a specific set of talents, skills weaknesses, and strengths. Usually these natural skills appear in our late teens and continue on with us for rest of our life. During the course of our life, these skills change very little.
One of the most important things you can do in your life is to identify your assets. Don’t go against nature, instead, recognize and develop your natural skills and make them benefit you. They will lead you to doing what you love.
Look back to when you were accomplishing a specific task which you were excited to do. Look at how you excelled, how you felt as you achieved that task. Take that experience and compare it to your list of natural skills. Did you excel because your task involved one of your natural skills?
Doing anything that you have a natural talent for is always easier than doing something you have no natural talent for. Look at your job. Whether you like it or not, do you excel easily at it or do you spend most of the day struggling to accomplish your tasks?
Perhaps if you are struggling, then you are going against your skills. It is hard to accomplish tasks we do not enjoy. However, when we enjoy our tasks, we excel and are proud of our accomplishments.
Spend some time going over your natural skills then ask yourself the following questions:
- If you could afford to work without pay, what would you do?
- Do you have a natural ability to perform this type of work? Is it something you do well and enjoy doing?
- Is this type of work something that you have done before, perhaps when you were younger? Did you feel good about what you had accomplished and receive praise from others?
- Is this type of work easy for you to learn and do? Does it hold your attention to the point that you often lose track of time?
- Is it something you love learning more about? Could you talk about it day in and day out and never get bored?
- Do you admire other people who have excelled in this same type of work?
Your natural skills are embedded within your subconscious mind. They are what you were “meant” to do. You need to discover these natural talents and use them to benefit you.
Natural skills are different from general skills. Any general skill can be learned from repetition or from reading an instruction manual. Natural skills are something you have a “knack” for, you know them instinctively.
If you discover your passion in life, but lack another skill to achieve your goals, learn that skill. Adding other additional skills to your set of natural skills will be easy because you already know what you are good at. By learning another skill, you only enhance your natural skills. Don’t ever refuse to learn another skill just because it is not part of your set of natural skills.
Even after you find your passion, never stop learning. You can always excel more when you put your knowledge to good use.
