American History 1800 What Were Economic Factors That Motivated People to West?
The prospect of being able to own a larger amount of land for a smaller price than back east. The general practice of primogeniture (all of the families assets; farms, buildings, etc go to the oldest son) meant that there were lots of younger sons who did not inherit the family farm, or really much of anything. Given the large family sizes and the fact that this had been going on since white settlers first came to America, land was getting increasingly expensive and difficult to procure in the east. America was still an agrarian society at the time, so moving to town and picking up a trade was not really the option that younger sons who had been raised on a farm chose. Instead, they went where the land was so that they could establish their own farm.
