Another type of drug, which acts on the neurotransmitters Dopamine and Noreprinephrine is a dopamine reuptake blocking compound named Bupropion,(Wellbutrin).
Tricyclic Agents. These are used in the treatment of the following;
Depression,
Panic Disorder,
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder,
Post traumatic Stress Disorder
and occasional chronic pain.
SSRIs. These treat;
Depression,
Panic Disorder,
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder,
Bulimia Nervosa and
Social Phobia.
Bulimia Nervosa is when a person binges on food or has regular bouts of overeating and feels a loss of control. Then they vomit and abuse laxatives because of the fear of gaining weight.
MAOIs Are Used For All Types Of Depression.
They’re also used sometimes for atypical features of Depression, like excessive sleeping, anxiety and overeating.
If you’re on an anti-depressant, it may have a different name, but it’ll almost certainly fall under one of the types mentioned above.
SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed drug, the main reason being that they appear safe if someone happens to take an overdose.
How Effective Is Depression Medication?
Great relief may be found in anti-depressants. They work quickly to relieve suffering even in severe cases of Depression. However, so far as the long term is concerned, treatment with drugs is a different story altogether. After all, relieving Depression in the short term is all very well, but what’s to stop it from returning? Not anti-depressants, I’m afraid.
As I’ve said repeatedly, all you’re doing in any case is to treat the symptoms.
Naturally enough, the drug companies love to shout the praises of the newer drugs they put on the market, but in fact these show no better success than the older ones.
Depression, Drugs and Relapse.
We’ve seen that anti-depressants are truly effective in only one third of the people who take them, partially effective in another third, and the rest don’t enjoy any relief whatever. The real problem, though, is the question of relapse. This is where medications really fall short.
Now, we can talk figures and statistics all day, but it’s been my personal experience that drugs are first class in the short term. As we’ve seen, they treat you quickly and, certainly in my case, with great efficiency. They proved to be particularly good for treating a screaming Panic Attack or high Anxiety. There’s absolutely no doubt about that.
But we still have to face the knotty problem of total cure.
Alternative treatments such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy have a 70% better success rate for treating Depression for good than do drugs.
