Effectively Setting Goals

It’s important from the outset you specify an ambition, and also by which when you would like to achieve it. It is not only important to make this happen, however, you also need to break this ‘main’ goal, into little sub goals which help you to reach the main goal.

For instance, in 2009 I set an ambition (which I’ve now attained) to lose a stone in weight in two months. Here you can observe that I’ve set the absolute goal, coupled with specifying a deadline. Setting a deadline for when you’d like to achieve the goal is extremely important, as this will make it more real to you, and you’re more likely to bust your tail in achieving it, in comparison to should you specify no deadline at all. However, this isn’t the only important aspect, as I then had to specify sub goals which would altogether result in the achievement of my definitive goal that was to lose a stone in weight. The sub goals I set were to exercise for at least thirty minutes five times each week, to drink at the very least 4 litres of water everyday and to stay away from unhealthy foods (take away foods, biscuits, cakes etc) altogether. As can be seen, these sub goals, are all health-related, so when combined, will unquestionably put me on course, and in actual fact end up in me achieving my absolute goal which was to shed a stone in weight in two months.

This is only one instance of how I’ve set a goal within my life and achieved it using this method, but it can, and should be used when wishing to set any goal what so ever within your own life. By way of example, if you wished to pass a test inside the next two months, this is the absolute goal, however the sub goals could be to read and comprehend a certain volume of pages every single day that would allow you to complete the study book, and to maybe complete one practise paper each week.

When setting goals its imperative you write them down and focus on them often throughout the day. I consult my goals from the moment I arise in the morning, and many times throughout the day, with me even placing them at my bedside, with the intention that I am able to read them again just before sleeping. The most effective way I’ve found to refer to them often during the day is to print many copies of them. I’ll stick a copy on the fridge that’s looked at when I’m in the kitchen area, I’ll stick a copy above my monitor to view it when at the PC, and I’ll carry around a copy in my wallet, so that I can refer to it whenever I visit the toilet, as I always have my wallet in the pants I’m wearing.

Thanks for reading this article, and I hope it may assist you in achieving the goals in life you strive for.
