Good – Look for It – Praise It

Long before, ‘Affirmations,’ became a buzz word. Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics and Harold Arlen wrote the music to the song, ‘Accentuate The Positive.” It was popularized by Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and The Andrew Sisters, who each recorded it (1945). Crosby’s recording seemed to resonate more with people. Ella Fitzgerald and Willie Nelson’s recording were popular in later years.

The opening refrain is direct and to the point. “You’ve got to accentuate the positive. Eliminate the negative. Latch on to the affirmative. Don’t mess with Mister In-Between.” While this catchy song was direct and to the point, the concept has escaped mass consciousness.

The book, “The Power of Positive Thinking,” (1952) by Norman Vincent Peale, has reportedly sold 20 million copies in 42 languages. In spite of these phenomenal works, mass consciousness overlooks the positive and accentuates the negative to the degree it has been coined, “The glass is half empty syndrome.” Many people espouse the concept, of positive thinking, but, are unable to effect walking their talk.

Mass consciousness needs to shift. Mass consciousness starts with one person. You can be that person. Start by looking at the good in yourself and praise it. Look at the good in others, in your children, in the world, in the people you work with, in nature, and in everything. When you find good and then praise it, you will notice there is more good than negative. Speak the good out loud.

The University of Pennsylvania Psychology research shows it improves our immune system to praise the good and express gratitude. Your body feels better when you praise, when you appreciate and when you are in gratitude.

Start right this second, look for the good in this second. Look for the good in the first person you see or think of. See the good in an activity you are doing and speak a word of praise. Look for the good and praise it in everything around you. You are creating new mass consciousness-accentuate the positive.
