How Do You Motivate Yourself to Study Difficult Subjects in School?

I'm sure each of us has at least one subject that we needed to do well on and yet for one reason or another were not at all drawn to. I'm having a great deal of difficulty getting myself excited about math, and my grades and understanding of it are suffering.

Are there any students out there who have overcome a "dreaded subject" and gone on to do well in it? How do you motivate yourself to put in the time required to succeed?
