Suggestion:
Motivational speaking absolutely requires travel and how much you are paid depends on your reputation/success. You can't stay in the same place/community and expect to stay busy enough to earn a decent living. It requires self-promotion and networking (with the help of an agent and/or publicist) to make a name for yourself.
As far as education, there are no set requirements for motivational speaking, though many college courses would be advantages (e.g. psychology, creative writing/speech writing, public speaking, and of course, any subjects related to your field of expertise.)
There are many motivational speakers out there who have no formal education regarding public speaking. They speak from life experience and share what they have learned from those experiences. Obviously, the first requirement is, you must have some such life experience or expertise which is valid and compelling enough to inspire others.
