Pop psychology is what us in the field usually call them because they are nice to hear, very sensible, yet offer minimal substance (if any), and doesn’t have the power to really compel change in your life.
Now, I’m going to share a simple, yet very effective way to really live a happier life on a day-to-day basis.
You have heard of the saying “be satisfied of what you have and you would be happy” or any of its variations. You’ve also heard of “think it and you’ll be able to attract anything, no matter how big, to your life” also with its different variations. They both preach opposite ends of a single spectrum.
First off, it’s human nature to desire bigger and better things. We are preordained to pursue and work towards something bigger (may it be material or conceptual). Being satisfied with your current condition is like fighting your very nature. I believe the more accurate statement is to appreciate what you have, yet keep pursuing worthwhile goals.
On the other hand, thinking and believing that anything your mind conceives, it can definitely achieve has derailed too many people because it is usually misinterpreted. Most people merely think and wait for results to come or set goals that are too big for their work ethic, skills, and resources to handle just to end up frustrated.
Both of these positions in thinking sound good and are easy to sell, yet they often leave many sad people in their wakes.
The secret to a really happier life is enjoying the journey.
Enjoy the journey of pursuing worthwhile goals and challenges, while appreciating what you have, and also enjoy the little achievements as you actively pursue constantly growing targets (not a really big goal that is too big for you).
That’s it, most people take for granted everyday and live through them in autopilot. If you consciously enjoy the journey, you’ll start to notice minor things and you’ll live a happier life.
