How to Stay Strong and Motivated in a Cross Country Meet?

I've heard that running cross country, most of it has to do with the mind. If you are mentally ready, you will finish the race without stopping.
I had my first meet in my whole life yesterday, and I was super nervous. Half way through the course I almost gave up, like I was thinking "I can't possibly finish this whole thing!". It's frustrating sometimes seeing others pass you and you just can't catch up because you are soooo tired.
What are some ways of motivating myself whenever I'm running? Like in meets or practices?
Also, how can I improve myself in running long distances, I seem to get tired real quick?
Thanks. :)

Suggestion:

I just had my 3rd practice today, we ran about 1 and a half miles. I was like about to pass out! The pathetic part was i was in track too last season. But i kept running (almost) the whole time because i kept promising myself i would make it to some point in front of me without stopping, and i did. i think iPods would help alot except they dont allow us them only during practices where we just run. Train with your ipod, and im sure youll improve! You just need a distraction and will power. Oh and dont forget water.
Tell your body you ARENT tired and WILL make it. Just keep telling yourself that and youll convince your body to do good :) its like when your sick, you can get better by being tricked with a fake pill that doesnt do anything. there's some scientific term for it,idk :
