However being punctual is a sign of respect, we all know what its like when someone is late, we understand but at the same time we are put out because usually we have to juggle our own agendas to accomodate for the lateness however genuine.
If you are continually late it is a sign of disrespect and can lead to you being over looked. This could mean Colleagues no longer invite you to work meetings, friends no longer invite you out, whats the point of inviting Bob he is always late, you cant rely on Bob.
What can you do about it, well it relatively easy to to do something about it.
To be on time you need to have an awareness of time, wear a watch have clocks in the house, have a clock in the office, check the time on your laptop,mobile phone the clock in your car. Remember to check they are set at the right time, to make sure call the speaking clock.
Next step is to plan, if you have a meeting check out how far it is away, check the weather, check motoring conditions are there any roadworks? allow time for any delays that may occur, as a general rule on motorways allow one hour for every 50 miles of your journey.
Next get organised, how many times are you rushing about trying to find your car keys? always keep them in the same place. Prepare your work clothes the night before, put the things you are going to need in one place so you can easily find them, like your laptop, purse, bag, wallet, notebook.
Next look at how you spend your time, make a note of the time you spend on the computer, watching tv, writing reports, on the telephone, replying to e-mails are you taking too long to do things, could you save time doing things differently. Can you delete unimportant tasks from you schedule.
Finally consciously make an effort to be early for everything, make it your goal to be early. However be careful not to announce you have arrived too early for a meeting, if you do arrive early its much better to sit in your car for half an hour and catch up on some work rather than announce you are a early.
We all know what is like to be told “The sales rep from Smiths is in reception” 30 minutes before the scheduled meeting is about to start, do you bring the meeting forward and stop the task you are working on and then get annoyed as He has interupted your schedule or feel bad for making him wait.
