I Can Never Motivate Myself to Practice My Instruments?

I'm in high school now and I have made a decision to make music my major and go to college to become a band director after I serve my 6 years in the USMC. My passion is music and I am really trying to become a skilled jazz clarinetist while learning the saxophone and etc. I just can never motivate my self into practicing though. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can motivate myself to practice daily.

(If I get a job as a band director I am also thinking of joining the USO or a big band like Artie Shaw or Glenn Miller since the bands are still present in this era)

Answer:

I don't know if you are right now but take lessons. That will help you a lot. Go on youtube and look up clarinet music that you like. Once you find a piece, you can buy it and that should keep you interested in playing. You can also practice solos along with a recorded accompaniment. It sounds better because your not just hearing yourself play this way.

whenever i'm given a new piece of music, i look for the recording of the piece on the internet, usually jwpepper.com or stantons.com , and i play along with the recording and quickly learn the piece like that….it's more fun to me……i wasn't very good when i was a freshman…now i'm a senior, and im the best musician in our program……
