Hypnotherapists are well skilled at persuasion techniques and commonly use them in their hypnotic inductions. Those self improvement teachers, hypnotherapists and motivational speakers who have trained in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) are well experienced in the covert use of such techniques.
However, this skill is not just the privilege of elite hypnotists, NLP practitioners or self improvement gurus!
Do you realise that in the sales and marketing industry a great deal of money is spent teaching new and established sales representatives how to effectively use subliminal persuasion tactics in their sales approach?
Changes are if you have bought something in the last few months from a salesman, in any industry, you have been the unwitting recipient of some very powerful subliminal persuasion techniques!
Although these techniques are extremely powerful they only remain that way when they go unnoticed i.e. they only remain powerful when they remain subliminal in nature. When you know that these tactics are being used you can shield yourself against their effects.
Likewise, when you understand how subliminal persuasion tactics have been used on you, you can also use them! Imagine using these tactics to get a pay rise, a date with that hot girl or guy, or just to make other people more agreeable to your suggestions!
I will now share one very powerful technique with you that works like a charm! Sale people use this technique extensively and once you know it you will notice when it is being used and you will also be able to use it yourself. This technique is known as “Mirroring”.
Mirroring is simple a subtle form of mimicking. When you mimic another person’s behaviours, and this mimicking goes consciously unnoticed, you instantly form an unconscious connection with that person. This type of mirroring is often used by pick-up artists to build a connection with a woman they want to date.
Mimicking is also extremely powerful when it is used in language. If you “mirror” back the way a person talks by mimicking their speech pacing and the type of vocabulary that they use you will also build an instant connection with them.
For example, if someone constantly uses the word “man” (as in “I can’t believe that just happened, man!” or “are you going to the shop, man”) you would start to use that word – a little at first and then more later.
Say you wanted to persuade a friend to go to a certain place but they didn’t want to go. If your friend often explains things through fishing analogies like “You almost reeled me in their but I wasn’t biting” then you would use similar analogies like “why don’t we go where the fish are biting?… I know just the place where we can reel in some action”.
When you use the above type of mirroring technique on a stranger you must listen carefully to how they are speaking. Then when you mimic their use of language it often goes unnoticed because they do not know you and you just seem like a really cool person!
