Part 31 of 73

A few weeks after his death, I was back at University. Tears, anger and irritation were very close to the surface when I walked past the newspaper stand in the University hostel that afternoon. The news of those who had died was prominent on the front page. We had not been able to bring all the bodies home! I wanted to shout out my anger. I had that powerless feeling of wanting to fight back, but knowing I could not.

A few hours later in the early evening, we were all together in Doc, the student Deacon’s office. ‘It is up to you to decide if I should go on,’ I said. ‘I will go and wait outside.’

“The drama had begun about a week ago, when I had returned from the operational area. I had hardly dumped my things in my hostel room when someone came to tell me all about it. ‘Some of the guys are unhappy because you were not here,’ I hear. ‘They are saying that if you were loyal, you would have made sure you were back in time for the Student Representative Council elections.”I could not get back earlier,’ I replied. ‘And who are the guys that are so unhappy?’ I enquired.

‘ Some of the young Turks ‘ he answered’…and they have got some of the girls up in arms as well.’
