Suggestion:
I wouldn't exactally call myself a "self starter". I AM tho- a late in life starter. Due to this fact, I CAN say HOW I mmaintain MY "gusto". I constantly remind myself where I come from, and where i have been, and the kind of person I USED to be. I used to be a "nothing", with nothing, all about "nothing". I prided myself because of I was able to be HAPPY about "nothing". NOW, however, I am having things (no matter how trivial they may seem to others like food, shelter, and clothes, and a job). And I am proud of myself for maintaining them. I never had these things before on a consistent basis. I never was able to KEEP these things because of the way I lived my life when I was young. S0ooo, I KNOW what it is to have to live without, therefore i strive to keep them, constantly trying to make them better. I make things WORK in my life. And work well. For example: I cannot afford a car, so, I moved to an apt right next to store to my job. I walk. I walk my daughter to school. We walk to the grocery store, and take the bus to DR appts. I do not NEED a car. I make my life work well with what I DO have….and live with in my means. My "gusto" is not being "without" anymore, and make things I do have work well for me. I am a resourceful person. When i am in NEED, I find a way.
I think you need to PRACTICE your gusto until it becomes like second nature to you. Make it a HABIT to have, and maintain your gusto. Think of what you will be if you didn't have any… ? Think of how you would feel if you didn't pursue your hopes and dreams. Think of what you won't have if you do not go with your gut, and become YOU.
